Movie Poster Art: The Classic 'Universal Monsters' Movies

Universal Monsters or Universal Horror, was the name given to a series of horror, suspense and science fiction films made by Universal Studios from 1923 to 1960.

Universal's earliest success in the genre was 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame' in 1923 starring Lon Chaney as Quasimodo. Off the back of the success of this movie, Universal continued with such movies as 'The Phantom of the Opera', 'Dracula', 'Frankenstein', 'The Mummy', 'The Invisible Man', 'The Bride of Frankenstein', 'The Wolf Man', and 'Creature from the Black Lagoon', starring legendary actors from the era Lon Chaney, Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney, Jr and more.

Check out the original posters from some of the classic 'Universal Monster' movies below.

All artwork for the show will be based on different genres of literature - the first of which is the HG Wells sci-fi classic, 'War Of The Worlds'.

Cool Art: 'Ellen Ripley' by Mark Raats

'Ellen Ripley' by Mark Raats.

This was a private commission for an art collector.
"The collector took a print of the illustration the New York Comic- Con recently and this is what he wrote about meeting with Sigourney Weaver:
"Sigourney Weaver asked if I was the artist. I told her, "No, my friend Mark did it." She responded, "I've seen a lot of art of the character. A lot of it doesn't come out well. This one is beautiful." Then afterwards, as I was about to leave the room, a guy called me over to look at the print. He scrutinized it, then said, "Wow. This is great." It was Jim Simpson, Sigourney's husband".

Book Review: 'Grant Morrison's 18 Days'

This book from Dynamite Entertainment, is a preview for an animated motion comic series from Grant Morrison, in a reimagining of the mythic tale, Mahabharata . . . and follows the course of the climactic war that concludes the age of the gods and begins the age of man. It is the prototype for every war ever fought. The scale is epic, wherein the biggest armies ever conceived face one another across the ultimate battlefield to decide the fate of the future.

Inside is a detailed pitch for the series, including the story, characters and layout for scenes in this mythic tale, together with concept art, fully rendered artwork and a script from the chapters in the story. The art by Mukesh Singh that features in the book, as demonstrated in the cover art, is simply stunning, the attention to detail is just something else, and is the reason why I bought this hardcover book!

If you picked up the book just for the art, like me, then it's well worth it. It's just a shame that the art that is in the actual animated series (which you can see on the Graphic India YouTube channel) isn't the same that's in this book.

'Batman: Arkham Origins' TV Spot Trailer

'Batman: Arkham Origins' lets players experience Batman's transformation from an unrefined vigilante into the Dark Knight. Bruce Wayne's journey to become a crime fighter and his steadfast morality began much earlier in his life, formed by tragedy, dedication, and honour. As you'll see in this latest trailer, his quest was anything but easy.

'Batman: Arkham Origins' features an expanded Gotham City and introduces an original prequel storyline occurring several years before the events of 'Batman: Arkham Asylum' and 'Batman: Arkham City'. Taking place before the rise of Gotham City's most dangerous villains and assassins, the game showcases a young, raw, unrefined Batman as he faces a defining moment in his early career as a crime fighter that sets his path to becoming the Dark Knight. As the story unfolds, witness identities being formed and key relationships being forged.

Cool Art: 'Soloria' by David Nakayama

'Soloria' by David Nakayama.
"Concept art from a scrapped MOBA game. Soloria, our Outlaw Gunfighter hero unit, was shaping up pretty well, and we were all starting to think of her as a possible face for the game, probably because of her eye-catching red palette and unique theme and origin. You don't see a lot of Mexican-themed heroes in MOBAs, and we were hoping to be the first. (Just think of all the cool possibilities for skins, starting with a Dia De Los Muertos!!) Man, I'm sorry this game didn't make it."
